The Lean Plate Club Holiday Challenge

28 11 2006

From the Washington Post’s Lean Plate Club page:

This Week’s Goals

Food Goal

Add fiber-rich foods and to keep eating the two cups of fruit and 2.5 cups of vegetables recommended last week. (The U.S. Dietary Guidelines urge men to eat 38 grams of fiber per day; women, 25 grams.

Exercise Goal

Walk just five minutes twice today. Gradually add more minutes so that you log 10 minutes twice a day by next week.

If you’re like me, you’re feeling a little panicked after the Thanksgiving weekend. And to help handle it, I’m reaching out for all the help I can find [MORE].

This week’s column is focused on fiber (a subject dear to my heart):

Women in the study who chose to increase their fiber consumption by eight grams per day — roughly equal to a bowl of whole-grain cereal and a slice of whole-grain bread — wound up eating 150 fewer daily calories than participants who opted to cut their fiber intake by three grams a day. During the 12-year study, women with the highest daily fiber consumption shed about eight pounds. Compare that with the nearly 20 pounds gained by women with the lowest fiber intake.

Lean Plate Club member Cynthia A. Herringa, a nurse at the National Institutes of Health, doesn’t save high-fiber cereal just for breakfast. She also snacks on it while sipping green tea.

“It really helps to fill me up,” says Herringa, who rises daily at 4:30 a.m. and begins work at 6:30 a.m. By 10:30 a.m., she’s hungry and looking for food. The high-fiber cereal — which she brings to work measured out in small bags — satisfies her. “I can go with that without being tempted by any of the desktop holiday snacks that are always creeping up in the office,” she says.

Sally Squires (Health and Nutrition Columnist for the Washington Post), the author of The Lean Plate Club Holiday Challenge, has really thrown herself into this project. There’s a live chat every Tuesday Afternoon (1 p.m. EST today) and we can submit questions in advance.

And the goals are so attainable. I stumbled into it yesterday — I brought a baggie of celery to work for lunch. And now, I’m going back to add these goals to my Just4Today pledge!

As a bed and breakfast owner, we have a great selection of high fiber cereals, not just for guests but for snacking as well. A good idea you brought up, since it’s a filling snack and easy

Hey GP, where in Montana are you? Mister is always talking about how much he liked living Bozeman.

If you get hot cereal everyday up there, it sounds pretty good to me.

Hey Katebird… we’re here in Whitehall and proud owners of a bed and breakfast , THe Fish creek House..45 minutes as the crow flies from Bozeman.

As a long time ultra runner and now endurance rider, definitely am into the healtheier lifestyle and food choices for both us and our guests!! We even have an onsite greenhouse to grow fruits and veggies.

Would like to somehow collaborate efforts with you either linking our blogs and/or some kind of cross marketing . Thoughts?

Yes, GP — I thought I sent a message yesterday. I’ll try it again tomorrow.

I’m fine from the drive, but I think people get goofy when the weather gets bad. Not that we get that much bad weather — maybe that’s the problem?
